Enjoying poking around on Cyberspace

I wasn’t around for the “heyday” of twitter, but that ship has sailed (or burned, mix your own metaphors). Seems like a bunch of nerds talking shit and being kind to each other

Reading

[It’s Out There](https://www.mylesrobertsscifi.co.uk

Just finished it! If you liked Douglas Adams and/or Terry Pratchett, this gave me similar vibes. If you didn’t like them, you still may enjoy it. Flew through it, it’s hilarious, but also asks a lot of questions about our current society, AI, what the stock market even is, war, and wraps it up in a tale about a fella and his ship who aren’t really sure what they’re meant to be doing.

My one complaint would be that pretty much every planet they visit could have been its own book, which left me wanting more. That might be two complaints, depending how you count them.

The Expanse (Again)

I’ve read em all before, but now introducing my wife to the series. After the success of Project Hail Mary, felt like some more “hard” sci-fi. I had forgotten the vomit zombies, and how great Human Miller was (spoiler alert!). I may need to get a hat, and steal some quotes.

Malazan: Book of the Fallen

Up to book 8 9. Takes a while to start to make any sense. Sometimes feels like a bit of slog, but some of the characters are 10/10. Get ya fantasy series in without ALL of the tropes/standards.

Playing

“New” NMS Expedition. The timegating on some missions is a little frustrate, but the actual story/gameplay feels great.

  • Addendum, this is over now, so a bit “what next?”. Might have to build another new ship. Maybe a visualisation of the YT-2400 we’re running around in for Starting Out Green

A second run through Cyberpunk 2077 (first since Phantom Liberty). Swords for keeping things quiet, shotguns for when that goes awry vs the pistols/netrunner build on my first run.

Listening

Nine Inch Noize

Some thoughts:

  • Some of these songs I have been listening to for 20+ years
  • What if NIN, but from the future? (maybe instead of the 80’s)
  • Literal goosebumps on more than one occasion
  • Play it loud, and/or on good cans

Much like all the old punk bands singing about how work/highschool sucks and falling in love with teenage girls, there’s something a little creepy about a 60 year old man and his songs of being angry/horny. Tunes are good though. Some solid gold bops.
