Considering delving into/steering my career towards the world of “Cyber Security”. What does that even mean?

Questions

Apart from a broad overview, I probably need to narrow down what kinda field I’m interested in. What are the fields?

Would MacOS work, or is Linux the go to for actual reasons?

Cybrland looks beautiful, and I believe I’d very much want a dedicated machine (at least for learning) for the practical reasons of not completely hosing a “production” machine.

Options:

  • requisition Shiv’s little laptop
    • Free, but they’d be pissed if I killed it, and it’s also the only non-work-issued laptop in the house that runs windows.
  • Pick up an old MacBook air - ~£100 or less on ebay - Put Linux on it - Ulterior motive/retire it into a writerdeck
  • Pick up some other used laptop
    • May be compatible with more things?

Learning

https://www.oxfordhomestudy.com/ has a free course. I did start a while ago, but it’s basically a PDF in the vein of “my first computer”.

Network Chuck’s Academy has a lot more on there than there was last time I checked, which is actually kinda exciting. The guy does get a bit “youtube” but appears to know what he’s on about.

Free courses England get an actual certification but finding a course that’s actually funded may be impossible.

Aaaand I’m falling into a Hack The Box rabbit hole. Seeya on the other side.

Other Thoughts

There is some kinda fantasy about hacking Drafts/Secret sales and pulling a bit of a fuck you, pay me “I’m the security” now move. Throw it in with the fraud I’m chasing down anyway.
